GEORGE T. GRIER SCHOOL OF USHERING

First Master 's Degree Graduates - Class of 2017

George T. Grier was a man of integrity who could visualize, organize and supervise. He hailed from Illinois and served as the first State President.

Brother Grier made numerous noteworthy contributions to the growth of the National, most notably the founding of the School of Ushering. In 1948, with the help of the Illinois Ushers, he gave a demonstration of Church ushering. Also, he designed the National Pin and wrote the Ushers Universal Manual and Handbook. He offered a Resolution that a National School be organized in 1951. As a result, he was appointed the first Chairperson.

In 1952, when he was Chairperson of the School, 210 graduates walked across the stage to receive diplomas at the first National Graduation. In 1955, he organized the 7:00 A.M. Ushers’ Workshop. These workshops teach Ushers the silent uniform method of Church ushering by means of signal codes. In 1961, in Denver, Colorado, the School was given the name “George T. Grier School of Ushering” honoring the man who had contributed so much to the Department. Brother Grier was fondly given the name “Mr. Usher” by President R.E. Harshaw.

Purpose: The purpose of The George T. Grier School of Ushering Department is to promote one unified Silent Uniform Method of Ushering as set forth in the “School of Ushering Manual” published by NUCUAA, Inc. This Department is responsible for: (1) the training of all Ushers (Seniors, Young Adults, and Junior and Young People), and Certified Instructors in the techniques of Church Ushering at the State level and at the seat of the National Convention; (2) conducting a 2-hour morning Workshop every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at the seat of the National Convention; and (3) conducting the National Floor Demonstration Competition (on Tuesday morning), the National Drill Competition (on Wednesday morning), and the King and Queen Contest (on Thursday morning) at the seat of the National Convention. Also, most importantly, to make sure that each State Chairman receives National Workshop Certificates for their Ushers (Seniors, Young Adults, and Junior and Young People) who have successfully attended and completed all four (4) morning Workshops for three (3) consecutive National Convention years to receive their National Bachelor’s Degree. The ultimate goal of this Department is to help develop better Church Ushers in all States.

The Ministry of Church Ushering is a sacred and powerful responsibility. In order to carry out the duties and responsibilities of Church Ushering, a Church Usher must first and foremost be a Christian. Church Ushers must be Christ-like with a spirit of meekness and humility. Also, Church Ushers must be well-trained in all aspects of the techniques of Church Ushering. A well -trained Church Usher is one that can master situations that may come up during a Church service.
