 Alma Hawkins Public Relations Department

In 1962, Raymond A. Smith, from Washington, D.C. conceived the idea of a Public Relations Committee.  The committee was later chaired by Alma C. Hawkins.  The department was organized to keep the public and the press informed of the activities of the National Organization.  Also, the department informs churches of our presence in their cities and invites ushers to participate in meetings.

Alma C. Hawkins hailed from Washington, D.C.  She was a progressive lady with an outgoing personality.  She brought many recommendations to the state, regional and national which were accepted and improved under her guidance.  During her chairmanship, the public relations department reached its full growth and development.  The media was informed of our numerous conventions and published our events in newspapers.

The Public Relations Department was named the Alma C. Hawkins Public Relations Department in honor of one who was dedicated and determined to publicize the activities of the National Organization.

Sis. Hawkins made her transition in 1993, the year that the National was to honor her.  Nevertheless, her footprints are etched in every facet of each usher's house. Her significant contribution to public relations is remembered at the state, regional and national levels.
